Should be, but sometimes it just isn’t. I’ve definitely had plenty of times where I was like, oh shit, the only place I have that information is in this chat somewhere.
Other people, kind of like me, are just data hoarders. Just because I can’t think of a use of the data now, doesn’t mean I won’t be able to think of one in the future! I have piles of old inboxes in my archives.
I thought the stunt was on the part if TikTok. They shut down when they didn’t have to and then came back on all chummy with Trump when he announced the 90 day extension. The play was to kiss Trump’s ass. Biden signed it and they took advantage of the situation.

“These reports have not been confirmed at this time,” the article notes.
Sounds like a question for the judicial branch.
Goes on to form company called General Products, builds spacecraft hulls. 😉
And TikTok wants to be in his good graces. So they shut down their service voluntarily, then when Trump says they get the 90 days, they bring it back up immediately and thank him loudly for it.
It seems like the law prohibited distribution, but not use, is what I’m saying. So people could keep using it if Bytedance kept it up, right?
Point taken, but I’m just going to presume that all that will be declared satisfied in the EO in some token form or another.
AFAICT, TikTok didn’t have to do anything. Looks like the law is all about preventing distribution of the app. So… why’d they shut it down?
has no basis in law
Wikipedia says, with a couple references:
The president may grant a one-time extension of the divestiture deadline by as long as 90 days if a path to a qualified divestiture has been identified, “significant” progress has been made to executing the divestiture, and legally binding agreements for facilitating the divestiture are in place.
So I think he can do it.
Does the FCC have the discretion to do that after Chevron, I wonder?
It’s weird to see all these transparent, self-serving maneuvers playing out before our eyes. TikTok kisses ass. Trump, who advocated for a ban, now refuses to enforce it so his inauguration can be seen on it.
Did the law give Trump the power to change the deadline through executive order?
Also a great way for coinbase to curry favor with the Trump administration.
We need a competitor badly.
Some people really don’t like celebrating diversity for some reason.
