Nothing against the artist, they’re obviously highly skilled, but this (and other) character art is the biggest barrier to me wanting to try BG3.
I really don’t like it and have a hard time putting the reasons why into words. At the very least, the sneering smile, the hand gesture… It’s all too much. Feels like a Marvel movie poster.
Tbf I found that portrait image of Astarion incredibly offputting until he actually joined my team. He looks better in-game. He’s kinda annoying, but kinda likeable too.
I think they’re all in the style of D&D portrait art which is always/often trying to portray as much about the character as possible without resorting political cartoon labels.
A movie promo poster is not too far off an assessment.
Counter point KOTOR 2 made me want to collect an increasingly eclectic and thoroughly insane group of misfits. Which admittedly just devolves into Kreia being a bitch while T3 and HK act like an old married couple.
I mean not to put too much effort into a meme but this is also from BG3. Wouldn’t call him too unappealing

It’s literally a poster and, small spoiler ::: spoiler spoiler he’s a vampire, so he’s supposed to give a slightly unsettling vibe :::.
I also simply dislike Astarion. I have never understood the appeal.
The writing for his character is a rare mix of selfish and evil that functionally meshes with the storyline.
But I don’t care for him anyway.
I completely understand the appeal but I still just don’t like him. Great story! Still don’t want to be near him!
In my evil run he ended up being pretty fun. But he does usually end up dead in the nautiloid crash region otherwise.
I brought him on a goody good playthrough and regretted it.
well that’s the point isn’t it? it’s not a Bethesda game, you don’t gotta catch’em all and there are consequences to your actions

It’s funny watching him get ganked by goblins while Dark Urge, Laezal, Shadowheart actually deal with the problem.
The Dreamworks face doesn’t help
people call everything that now. this is not dreamworks face.
Thing is about being picky and selective. I can always pick good vs bad characters en the same media.
Ex.: Sephiroth is trash and one dimensional.
