I eventually gave up and just chose ALSA, which “just works” with the downside of being exclusive. I’ll give jack another try once I distrohop again.
Very often. You’re plobably thinking of midi playback, but all of those usb (piano) keyboards, drum pads, etc. use the same protocol. Midi is very much not dead.
Choices when trying to get reaper or ardour to work:
- Massive latency, unusable
- All other audio stops working
- No audio at all
- Have audio but now midi devices don’t work
But those only give you speed, not velocity!

I’m guessing what happened is that they didn’t have numbering, and then later the people making the slides decided to add the numbers. There might be a ticket for programmatic numbers, but it’d be buried under a thousand other ones that are more important.
